機器人如何操縱市場 擅長套利的 Virgil 公司在今年初投資特定以太幣交易時，遭受「騷擾機器人」(harassing bot) 的干擾，因此蒙受損失。該公司每分鐘都會查看價格，尋找加密貨幣價格的套利機會。然而敵對的機器人會貼出低於其他賣家提出的價格，並且下單出售以太幣，促使 Virgil 公司試圖買進。然而就在 Virgil 公司完成買進之前，機器人就會取消賣單。結果，Virgil 所下的買單從未獲得執行，卻提高了其他交易的價格， 這種假造掛單、接著取消掛單的做法被稱為「誘騙」(spoofing)，目的是產生一種資產供應或需求高於實際情況的印象。美國期貨和股票市場在 2010 年禁止這種做法，但在加密貨幣市場，長久來一直有人指控這類操作發生。 「操縱市場」有其捍衛者一些反對加密貨幣監管的比特幣支持人士不認為市場操縱是錯誤的，反而公開支持。 交易人士 Kjetil Eilersten 開發出名為「Quatloo Trader」的程式，他稱為是領先的加密貨幣市場操縱工具。他表示，禁止操縱數字貨幣是沒有意義的，而為小型交易者提供精緻的操縱工具，用來平衡加密貨幣交易環境是更好的。他說，如果人人都操縱，也就是沒有人操縱。 其他加密交易交易人士則把操縱行為視為破壞加密幣的採用。 機器人可用來拉抬價格機器人還可用來哄抬價格 (pump-and-dump schemes)，交易人士在倒貨前先拉抬加密貨幣的價格，進而賺取獲利，那些以高價買進的投資人最終的損失最多。 Quatloo Trader 有個「鯨魚工具」，這類工具之一的「乒乓」(ping pong) 可讓使用者讓自己自行執行買單與賣單，創造出一種加密貨幣交易活動活絡的幻覺。這種所謂的「沖銷交易」在股票與期貨市場中是違法的。 華爾街日報 8 月曾報導過，加密貨幣「拉抬群組」在六個月內至少炒作 8.25 億美元。 監管機構已留意到這點。商品期貨交易委員會（CFTC）與美國司法部正在調查加密貨幣操縱，而美國證管會則一直在對抗詐欺性質的代幣發行。CFTC 特別針對涉及加密貨幣的哄抬炒作發出警告，也為舉發這種操作的人提供獎勵。
